Synthetic Grass for Playgrounds

Our Kids and Our Playgrounds

We all know that Playgrounds are exciting, fun places for children. They can help to build dexterity, and they are a great place to make friends. Kids are marvelously inventive and use playground equipment in many different ways not intended by the manufacturers.

The vast majority of injuries on the playground are connected with climbing equipment and swings. More than half of injuries on a playground result from falls to a surface.

Because falls are the most common type of playground accident, there should be special attention given to preventing falls and lessening their severity. Children fall because they slip, lose their grip, or lose their balance while playing on monkey bars, swings, slides, merry-go-rounds, and seesaws.

Something as simple as drawstrings from a hooded sweatshirt can catch on a piece of playground equipment and can lead to a fall.

Whether playground injuries are caused by falls or other types of contact, attention to three major factors can help to reduce the incidence of injury: playground surface, playground design, and equipment installation and maintenance.

Playground Surfaces with Synthetic Grass

The type of surface on the playground is the most important factor in the number and severity of injuries due to falls. The number and severity of injuries can be reduced by using softer surfaces.

Grass, soil, and packed-earth surfaces are also unsafe because weather and wear can reduce their capacities to cushion a child's fall. Soil, packed dirt, grass, and turf are not recommended for surfacing, because their ability to absorb shock can be affected greatly by weather conditions and wear.

A well-planned playground should offer activities to encourage the development of perception and physical skills, including running, walking, climbing, dodging, swinging, sliding, throwing, catching, pulling, and pushing.

Falls from playground equipment onto the surface below is a contributing factor in 79 percent of all playground injuries.

A proper playground surface is one of the most important factors in reducing injuries - and the severity of injuries - that occur when kids fall from equipment.

The surface under the playground equipment should be soft enough and thick enough to soften the impact of a child's fall. This is what critical fall height is all about.

How does Synthetic Grass Comply?

Our FT 40/50/60 range of Synthetic grass were specially manufactured for this purpose. The grass is very soft, durable and is in filled with shock absorbency materials.

The first layer is in filled with a clean white washed silica sand and then followed by the second layer of SBR rubber granules. These granules sizes are typically between 0.8-2.5mm in diameter.

More on the infill material can be read here. When opting for the FT grass, the longer pile grass can be installed underneath critical fall areas with an added infill depth of 10mm to provide more cushioning.

This range of Synthetic grass (FT40/50/60) is also mush less abrasive than natural grass with grass burn almost eliminated.

Playgrounds and outdoor play equipment can provide our children with fun, fresh air, and exercise, but they can also pose some safety hazards. Faulty equipment, improper surfaces, and careless behavior are just a few of the dangers that cause children on playgrounds to visit hospital emergency departments.
